Korean Wedding Tradition

In ancient times Korean marriages were performed in the courtyard of the wife or house. The groom arrived on a horse in the home of the bride and after passing the marriage took his wife on a palanquin (cart) to his parents living at home. The married flaunt hanbok court costumes of the marriage ceremony.

The bride clothing for the wedding includes a chogori (short jacket with long sleeves) with 2 long tapes which are linked to form otkorum. A chima, a full-length, high-waisted wrap skirt is worn. Shaped boat shoes made of silk, are worn with white cotton socks. It also displays symbols and bright flowers.

The costume of married for marriage includes a jacket (chigori) and pants (paji) and a mantle (turumagi). The jacket has baggy sleeves, pants are important and associated with strap at the ankle. A jacket and black hat can be worn on the shirt.

Family names are seen as a very powerful lineage in Korea. Women do not change their surnames after marriage ancestral.
